The 2011 winner of the VIRGINIA WAGNER EDUCATIONAL GRANT is Sara Lucey. Sarah is a student at Wayne State Medical School. She has volunteered in the Brazil Medical Mission and Mott Children's Hospital and was co-founder for Students for Organ Donation. Sarah says "While my overall career goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon, I believe my ultimate goal for myself lies in the type of physician I strive and hope to become... I not only want to be a healer to my patients, but also a freind who shows compassion and understanding in their time of need. Most importantly, I desire to be able to provide this care to the underserved populations, whether it is in rural Brazil, or in my own backyard of urban Detroit." Sarah was awarded $2,000 toward expenses in medical school.
VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD...
recognizes a young woman, 14-17 years, who has done outstanding volunteer work in her community.
She has demonstrated initiative in both identifying a problem and trying to solve it. She is committed to making the world a better place.
The 2011's VIOLET RICHARDSON
AWARD winner is Minna Song.
Minna was a senior at Grosse Pointe North High School. She was president of SAVE (Students Against Violating the Environment). Minna's dream is to become an infectious diseases physician for Doctors Without Borders. This dream led her to doing a fundraiser for The Hunger Project (thp.org), an organization that "empowers women and men to end their own hunger" by providing them the means to begin sustainable farming, educating women, and setting up medical institutions.
Minna was awarded $500 and a $250 donation to The Hunger Project was donated in her name.
