2011 AWARD WINNERS

 VIRGINIA  WAGNER  EDUCATIONAL  GRANT ...
honors a woman who is enrolled in a university degree program, i.e., Bachelor, Master or Doctorate program and
  • shows effort toward scholarship
  • has done volunteer work in the community and/or school
  • has financial need

The 2011 winner of the VIRGINIA WAGNER EDUCATIONAL GRANT is Sara Lucey  Sarah is a student at Wayne State Medical School.  She has volunteered in the Brazil Medical Mission and Mott Children's Hospital and was co-founder for Students for Organ Donation.  Sarah says "While my overall career goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon, I believe my ultimate goal for myself lies in the type of physician I strive and hope to become... I not only want to be a healer to my patients, but also a freind who shows compassion and understanding in their time of need.  Most importantly, I desire to be able to provide this care to the underserved populations, whether it is in rural Brazil, or in my own backyard of urban Detroit."  Sarah was awarded $2,000 toward expenses in medical school.

The Ruby Award for Women Helping Women honors a woman who through her professional or personal life makes extraordinary efforts on behalf of women and girls. This year's award was presented to Charlotte Jarrett-Hunter who is a supervisor at Positive Images, Inc., a therapeutic community for addicted adult women who are in the process of recovery from alcohol and chemical dependency. She is devoted to the clients she serves and is a compassionate role model as she herself was once a client of Positive Images.  Charlotte says that this is where she belongs on earth, helping others.  A donation of $500 was made to Positive Images, Inc. in Charlotte’s name.   Congratulations Charlotte!

 VIOLET  RICHARDSON  AWARD...
recognizes a young woman, 14-17 years, who has done outstanding volunteer work in her community.                                   
  She has demonstrated initiative in both  identifying a problem and trying to solve it.  She is committed to making the world a better place.

winner is Minna Song
Minna was a senior at Grosse Pointe North High School.  She was president of SAVE (Students Against Violating the Environment).  Minna's dream is to become an infectious diseases physician for Doctors Without Borders.  This dream led her to doing a fundraiser for The Hunger Project (thp.org), an organization that "empowers women and men to end their own hunger" by providing them the means to begin sustainable farming, educating women, and setting up medical institutions. 

Minna was awarded $500 and a $250 donation to The Hunger Project was donated in her name.
