In memory of beloved Soroptimist Sue Neilson, SIGP presented a second WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY AWARD to Ann Johnson. Ann is a single mother of a 12-year old daughter.  She is raising her daughter alone and is the only financial support for her household.  She is currently working and attending Wayne State University in a Bachelor of Business in Management degree.  Ann was awarded $1,000.  SIGP missed meeting Ann as she was not able to attend the award ceremony due to illness.
  Congratulations Ann!
WOMEN'S OPPORTUNITY AWARD...the signature Award of Soroptimist International of the Americas!  This award honors a woman who is going to school to improve employment opportunities and is  head of household enrolled in a training or educational program has financial need.

2011's WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY AWARD  was presented to Allison Janos.  Allison is a single parent of a 9 year old daughter.  She worked as a waitress and took classes at night, graduating with honors in four years with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration.  However, because there were no jobs, Allison has returned to school for a second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Her long-term goal is to be a clinical nurse specialist.  Allison says "Just as the women before me demonstrated that our circumstances might influence who we are, it's my turn to teach my daughter that it's our choices and resilience that determine who we become".  Allison's motivation, achievement and dedication to her goals are recognized with this award of $2,000.
Congratulations Allison!

Allison's Women's Opportunity Award application moved on to District III.  At this level, her application was judged by a panel of three women not connected with Soroptimist and she won again!  Then her application moved on to the Midwest Region level, being judged against the District I, II, and IV winners. Allison won again and was awarded $5000 toward educational expenses  During her acceptance of this WOA award there were many tears in the audience as others relataed to her experience and felt her emotion.  Allison is working very hard to complete her nursing degree and she is humbled by the support from Midwestern Soroptimists and Soroptimist of Grosse Pointe.
